My mother and I attended a talk hosted by Bright Funeral Home, about end of life planning and final wishes. The meal was free for attending the meeting. The portions were much larger than we expected and I saw other tables getting take out boxes as I valiantly tried, in vain, to clear my plate. We also got dessert.
I had a Reuben Sandwich with a side of Onion Rings and the Korean BBQ Short Ribs on a bed of Sweet Potato Fries. My mother ordered a Balsamic Salad and the French Onion Soup. For dessert, she had a slice of Blueberry Cheesecake.
A week later we visited the funeral home for a personal meeting and went over our options. My mother wants to be cremated and so we picked out a nice spreader-type urn picked and the required paper work. Unless she decides otherwise, I will spread her ashes back in Port Townsend. I know papa wants his ashes spread out on the water in PT.
Honoring their wishes is not the final task. Filial duty extends beyond and into how I live my life, my decisions, and the continuation of the family line. I was not raised under such beliefs, rather this is something I have come to through a life lived, my experiences, and my wishes for the future.
