My Honest Thoughts on 6 Places to Visit in the Triangle

When you look beyond the busy metropolitan highways, you discover a rich network of distinct small towns, backroad intersections, and historic communities across Eastern North Carolina.

Featuring locations documented on Kasanje Travels, this guide focuses on small towns and local stops I’ve visited on my drives.

1. Wake Forest: A Sprawling Mish-Mash

As one of the most frequently visited areas on the site, Wake Forest bridges a bustling modern footprint with deep historic roots. The historical black districts elsewhere in town have mostly been bulldozed for new developments. Near the seminary is a plantation era historical district.

  • Key Stops: Walking down North White Street brings you past local landmarks like The Cotton Company, while nearby spots along Rogers Road (Starbucks) and Dr. Calvin Jones Highway (Wegmans) handle the day-to-day bustle.
  • Local Flavor: From Jeremiah’s Italian Ice to Blackbird Brewery and seasonal fireworks displays, there is always a reason to linger.

2. Youngsville: Small-Town Charm and Daily Gridlock

Located along the US-1 corridor in Franklin County, Youngsville offers a relaxed pace while remaining close to surrounding hubs. A population boom in the last 5 years has brought with it heavy traffic. From 2pm to 6pm every day it’s a 10-15 minute wait to get through town.

  • Character: Centered along US-1A and Main Street, featuring several bars, local shops, and friendly gathering spots. After Griffins’ roof collapsed, the cleared lot was relegated to parking space. Frequently, Bible thumpers stake out the sidewalk, haranguing passersby.

3. Rolesville: Growth with Endless Construction

This small town has been under development for year’s and year’s. All along US 401 there are signs saying the road is clear, but it’s still messy looking. The town feels a bit disjointed, like they planned it looking a particular way, but didn’t finish the project. I guess what I’m saying is it’s not organic.

4. Jeremiah’s Italian Ice: Eat, Be Happy

Located in Wake Forest, this is probably one of the best ice cream shops in the area that I’ve been to in a good long while. I don’t know if I could say it’s better than Goodberry’s Frozen Custard. I’d have to do a side by side comparison for that.

5. Real McCoy’s: Darn Good Food

We visited this restaurant to attend a talk on aging and funeral planning. The meal was free. You know those flyers that start showing up in the post box after you hit your 50s. The food was excellent. I’d be happy to go back and pay for a meal.

6. State Farmers Market: Good Luck on Finding a Spot

Down in Raleigh, off the big highways is a big complex full of local produce and handmade goods. The state farmers market seems to always be bustling with activity whenever I visit. Finding parking is the only problem.
