A Confederate flag displayed at N.C. exhibit at Great American State Fair was recently taken down on the claim that it glorified a divisive symbol.

This is an unfortunately misguided response to the presence of the historically accurate flag and the position North Carolina took in the American Civil War.
The fact is, NC sided with the South and signed on to the Confederacy. It was the second-to-last state to join, officially seceding from the Union on May 20, 1861.
NC may have drug it’s heels, but eventually their decision was to chose evil.
While I can understand the need to abolish glorification of past abuses, it should not result in the silencing of truth or the denial of a shared history.
For example, we certainly would take issue with Germany denying their role in the rise of Nazism in Europe.
The presence of the old American Battle Flag at the State Fair served an educational role. History is to be remembered, not forgotten.
Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.
